The Giving Department

The context

Since 2012, Sainsbury's Data Philanthropy Programme has mobilised analysts from across Sainsbury's, Nectar360, Argos and Sainsbury's Bank to help charities turn data into meaningful social and strategic insight.

The challenge

Many charities collect large amounts of data but lack the capacity or expertise to generate deep insight. Sainsbury's wanted to build a programme that used the skills of its analytics community to help charities understand their data, and needed help identifying charity partners to ensure a high-quality experience for both charity teams and analysts.

What we did

We supported the development of the programme alongside a team of internal stakeholders, and have since supported its delivery by:

  • Recruiting and preparing high-impact charities
  • Aligning charity needs with analysts' skills
  • Supporting logistics, readiness and engagement

The impact

Outcomes have included dashboards, models, maps and actionable insights, such as route modelling that improved delivery efficiency for a food insecurity charity, and survey analysis that strengthened mentee matching for a youth charity.
