Impacting 1 Million Lives Globally

The acquisition of Refinitiv by the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), a global provider of financial markets data and infrastructure, presented a unique opportunity to unify and enhance the business’ philanthropic efforts.

The deal included the merger of Refinitiv Charities and the LSEG Foundation. Recognising the potential for significant social impact, LSEG sought to develop a comprehensive social impact strategy that would engage their employees and empower communities worldwide.

The Giving Department embarked on a journey with the LSEG Foundation to redefine its vision and identify aligned, strategic partners globally.

We began by co-creating a new social impact strategy with the ambition of supporting one million people globally through targeted economic empowerment programmes. This strategy was built on three key areas of activity:

  • Fund: Invest in a select portfolio of high-impact global organisations focused on economic empowerment in education, employment, and enterprise.
  • Engage: Empower LSEG’s c.25,000 employees through matched fundraising, volunteer days, and support for locally selected charities, fostering a culture of giving back.
  • Convene: Leverage LSEG’s expertise in finance to drive systemic change by supporting initiatives that unlock the power of finance for positive sustainability outcomes.

We conducted rigorous research to identify and assess potential global charity partners, providing due diligence and guidance on selection criteria, and helping to assess and shortlist charity applications for Trustee consideration. A key outcome was the establishment of multi-year strategic partnerships with leading organisations such as Room to Read, Girls Who Code, Skills Builder, and Women’s World Banking. These partnerships extend beyond financial support, including knowledge sharing, employee volunteerism, and collaborative programme development.

Additionally, we supported the LSEG Foundation in selecting and onboarding a global charity technology partner to streamline grant management, track impact, and facilitate employee giving. We continue to provide ongoing support to the LSEG Foundation’s Trustee Board, ensuring alignment with the organisation’s overall strategic objectives.

Major changes such as a corporate acquisition are incredibly challenging, but they can also serve as a catalyst for positive change. By leveraging the merger of Refinitiv Charities and the LSEG Foundation as an opportunity to re-evaluate and strengthen its philanthropic approach, LSEG demonstrated a commitment to its core values through effective and meaningful social impact initiatives.
